Five Ways Breast Cancer Care is Changing

One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, making it one of the most common cancers in the United States. Fortunately, survival rates have tripled over the past 60 years, thanks to significant advances in screening, detection and treatment.
City of Hope® continues to expand access to therapies and improve quality of life. Current projects include:
-
Personalized treatment via I-SPY 2 trial, matching therapies to individual cancers.
This approach helps doctors adjust treatments and improve outcomes for patients. -
New drugs for ER+ and HER2- cancers that have returned, aiming to slow or stop cancer growth and extend lives.
-
CAR T cell therapy for brain metastases, using immune cells to target cancer in the brain.
-
Combining therapies to overcome resistance in common advanced breast cancer and testing strategies to delay progression.
-
CBD studies for joint pain from aromatase inhibitors, offering safe relief without opioids, are available for those suffering from significant joint pain.
Every breakthrough is made possible because of generous donors like you. Your commitment helps accelerate new studies, expand access to innovative care and bring hope to people facing cancer now and in the years ahead.
New Hope for Blood Cancer Patients
Blood cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, affect all ages and can appear without warning. Symptoms can range from night sweats and unexplained fatigue to lumps that don’t go away.
Several newer therapies have emerged recently that provide hope for people with blood cancer, as clinical trials are offering newer treatment options that improve survival rates and quality of life.
“Don’t ignore changes in your body,” advises Dr. Tanya Siddiqi with City of Hope. “When something feels off, it’s worth checking. Early detection can make all the difference.”
Dr. Siddiqi also encourages patients to practice self-care through balanced nutrition, exercise, and hydration.
City of Hope Welcomes and Honors All Faiths
Recently celebrating its grand opening for patients and visitors, the Wetterau Family Spiritual Care Center offers a peaceful place to pray, reflect and find strength.
Located at the City of Hope Orange County cancer specialty hospital, it is designed to reflect the spiritual diversity of the community. This first-of-its-kind multi-faith center invites patients and visitors to choose their own sacred space which is then displayed across a large screen.
Visitors can choose to be immersed in the sights and sounds of 7 unique spiritual environments — a chapel, mandir, mosque, synagogue, temple, alpine forest or shoreline — each created to bring calm and comfort in times of need.
“Our spiritual care center reflects City of Hope’s century-long commitment to taking care of our patients’ mind, body and spirit and uses advanced technology to give them a first-of-its-kind faith experience. This will be a sanctuary for our patients, their families and our staff,” said Annette Walker, President, Ronald and Sandi Simon Presidential Chair, City of Hope Orange County.
What Hope Looks Like Today
At City of Hope, research never stands still. Our physicians and scientists see meaningful changes that reflect decades of dedication, discovery and donor support. Here are a few advances they are seeing on the horizon:
-
Patients living longer lives with cancer
-
Personalized therapies guided by genetics and biology
-
Expanded access to innovative care
-
Clinical trials reaching more communities
-
Smarter care with tools and technology to guide physicians
These advances do not happen overnight — and they do not happen on their own. Your support plays a role in advancing research and turning scientific insight into real-world care. Making a legacy gift is a meaningful way to help ensure this progress continues for future generations.
Secure Your Own Legacy of Hope

-
Your Current Finances Aren’t Impacted. Including a gift to City of Hope in your will or trust wonʼt affect your cash flow.
-
You Can Bypass Taxes. Donating appreciated assets like stocks or real estate could help you avoid capital gains tax. Gifts through your will may lower potential estate taxes.
- You Can Help Others. Consider naming City of Hope as the ultimate beneficiary of your retirement plan assets, as these can be taxed at high rates when left to your heirs.
- You Can Secure a Legacy That Includes a Cure. Your gift could make a bigger impact than you thought, saving more lives from cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening illnesses.
