A Gift from a Goddess

Judy Tenuta
“She wanted her gift to bring recognition to City of Hope. She wanted to leave the world a better place.” — Vern Pang

Meet Janice Dell
When Janice Dell came to City of Hope for treatment, she noticed right away that it was a very different type of hospital. “Everyone I met — from the person at the front desk to anyone I saw in the hallways — would say hello to me, and would help me if I looked lost. And I have never been in an environment like that.”
Janice shares that at the beginning of treatment, her doctor recommended she visit the Positive Image Center. As she continued to work in a corporate setting, it was important to her to maintain her professional appearance. “He knew it mattered to me to look my best. That level of care and concern stayed with me,” says Janice.
Recently, Janice decided to give back by updating her living trust to include City of Hope. “I had already decided long ago to give some of my estate to charity. And without a doubt, City of Hope was my first choice because they saved my life. After I included gifts to my nieces and nephews in my estate plans, I included a percentage for City of Hope. I want it to go wherever they need it most. We can’t all be the geniuses that discover new cures, but we can help fund those who will!” she said.

Meet Lisa Vargas
“I personally experienced the warmth and concern offered by everyone at City of Hope when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 at age 48. I had a bilateral mastectomy and have been cancer-free ever since. With focus on patients’ mind, body and spirit, and commitment to excellence in treatment, City of Hope will continue to play a leading role in the search for a cure. I believe there will be an announcement that we’ve cured cancer. And with my participation on the Patient and Family Advisory Council, my current giving and my future legacy gift, I know I’ll be a part of that.”Breast Cancer, Beware!
City of Hope physicians are at the forefront of the battle to erase breast cancer with their strong commitment to new and innovative treatments.
Veronica Jones, M.D., the new chief of the Division of Breast Surgery, is actively investigating leading-edge treatments for breast cancer patients, including robotic mastectomies and combining precision medicine with novel imaging technologies to minimize complications and side effects.
“We can manage a lot of breast cancers and extend life. And a lot of breast cancers are curable,” says Dr. Jones. Screening for risk factors and undergoing tests like mammograms are crucial.
And in exciting new developments, researchers at City of Hope and Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), a precision research organization that is part of City of Hope, have created a new approach that could detect cancer earlier.
This technology, called A-Plus, has shown promise in detecting various cancers, including breast cancer. It requires smaller blood samples, making it more practical for widespread use.
City of Hope remains committed to pushing the boundaries of cancer research and technology and paves the way to a day when cancer is not only treatable, but preventable. We Are Here to Help You

Making Hope Personal Since 1997
In 1913, a group of people saw their family, friends and co-workers suffering from a lack of quality health care and took action to lay the groundwork for City of Hope.
Then, inspired by City of Hope’s roots, a female-driven community came together in 1997 to seek an end to breast and gynecological cancers. With a renewed aspiration of finding cures, Walk for Hope began. And since its inception nearly 30 years ago, Walk for Hope has raised over $47 million dollars to benefit progress in treating women’s cancers.
Some walk for a loved one. Some walk in honor of their own journey. Others walk for a tomorrow when everyone can get the care they deserve. And while the reason may be personal, the impact is universal. By walking, supporters contribute to City of Hope’s unmatched momentum in the race to find cures.
Today, Walk for Hope has grown into a nationwide, cancer-ending movement that makes hope happen by funding lifesaving research, access-widening advocacy and dignity-giving care for all.
Walk for Hope offers an opportunity for anyone who calls cancer a part of their story to take tangible steps toward the day when cancer is gone.
Are you ready? Let’s walk together to end cancer for all — forever.
