Stephen Miller was known for his integrity, generosity, and deep devotion to family. Born in Washington, D.C., and later settling in Los Angeles, Stephen built a respected career as a defense attorney and remained active in the legal community for decades. To those who knew him best, he was equally defined by his kindness and willingness to give of himself.
Family was central to Stephen’s life. His nephew, Maury, remembers a close relationship marked by encouragement, generosity and steady support. Stephen’s home was a welcoming place — one that reflected his warmth and became a gathering space for the people he loved. His sister, Sylvia, remembers him as someone everyone admired and respected. “He was intelligent, visionary and such a compassionate guy,” she shares. “He brought humor into the hardest moments.”
During his life, Stephen faced multiple myeloma and received care at City of Hope. He spoke openly with his family about the trust he placed in his care team and his appreciation for the coordinated, compassionate approach he experienced.
The care he received extended his life by nearly a decade — time spent with loved ones, at home, and engaged in the moments that mattered most to him. “He loved life so much,” Sylvia says, “and he absolutely treasured City of Hope for each additional day they gave him.”
Stephen’s affection for City of Hope extended beyond his own medical care. Years before knowing his long-term plans, he had quietly supported City of Hope through regular gifts to fund cures and treatments for other patients. When the time came to consider his legacy, he chose to include City of Hope in his will. This was a decision his family sees as a natural reflection of his values and his belief in giving back.
Today, Stephen’s generosity and his legacy will continue to make a difference. His gift supports Multiple Myeloma research and care at City of Hope, ensuring that patients and families receive the same expertise and hope he received.
